Camorra produced limited edition t-shirts designed by Glasgow School of Art design graduates. Camorra is actually the name of a mafia group, which they chose to adopt to show that they were serious about business (although not organised crime!).
They decided that the name and Godfather-inspired image of a horse’s head gave them a distinct 1940’s style identity. They came up with this idea after brainstorming as well as the idea of their product of limited edition t-shirts. Some students wanted to study at the Glasgow School of Art and went to a show there. As a result they had the idea of getting some of the students to design their t-shirts.
Although they started with a large number of people, several left, but this left them with a closer, core team. They had a big product launch of their t-shirts and got them made to order which allowed them to control the quality. They manufactured them in house according to set colours/prices added a care label to show the product care for each item. As each t-shirt was limited edition, it had an individual product number.
To market the product, they had a website which provided them with the platform to sell to a worldwide audience and all over
To get their initial revenue, they got a loan, sold shares and held a Hallowe’en Disco in school.
Their biggest challenge came when their Finance Director resigned in January and deleted all their accounts! The Deputy was duly promoted and took over, thankfully he had a paper record of it all so all was not lost! The team members felt the Company Programme gave them a valuable insight into the world of business in that they would be judged only by their results.
