Tangerine’s products were placemats and coasters made from surplus vinyl tiles and novelty items which they sold at local events.

Referring to themselves as “Team Tangerine” they came up with the name for the company as it was “easy to remember, didn’t tie them down to any products” and allowed them to have an attractive, eye-catching logo.

To decide on their product/service, they did a survey of local businesses and found that most of them had some amount of waste materials/surplus goods.  They realised that recycling this surplus could potentially be profitable.  With vinyl floor tiles, they came up with the idea to make placemats and coasters.

They also bought a supply of glow-sticks and flashy wands from a local school who had them left over from an event.  They were able to sell these at their Christmas celebrations and Junior Christmas Dance and were also asked to sell them at the Oban Hogmanay party by the organizers!

With the excess rubber tiles they had, they sold these to the local sports centre!

As well as the above, they sold their main product of coasters on parents’ nights.

To identify their customers, they researched their competitors to see who they were selling to.

Through doing Young Enterprise, they would say their greatest lesson has been that you have to take risks to know if they will work.  They would definitely recommend the Programme to other students as it is rewarding and provides lessons you can put to good use in the world of work.  If they had to do it all again, there’s nothing major that they would do differently!
