EVIP Summer Experience 2009!

It wasn't a quiet summer for YES's 'EVIP' coaches!

This year, their support extended throughout the 5 weeks of summer to help young people not only to have fun but to continue to support them right up to the beginning of their college or work placements.

Some of the YES team are seconded to Glasgow City Council to help deliver 'EVIP' (the 'Enhanced Vocational Inclusion Programme') which aims to help young people to reengage in education.  Throughout the year, this involves supporting young people who have been excluded from school as they attend college.

The EVIP Summer Experience ran for 3 days a week over 5 weeks and consisted of morning sessions of business and enterprise activities and in the afternoon the 20 young people participating got the chance to let off steam and have some fun at a variety of activities such as ten pin bowling, paintballing and a theme park.  There was a hidden learning element even to the afternoon work, though, with communication and team work skills being developed through the activities!

The summer experience was funded by Glasgow City Council (who also provided staff and premises) and Youthlink Cashback for Communities Fund and culminated in an Awards Day in July where parents and family members were treated to a buffet lunch, had the chance to see photos from the 5 weeks and hear a presentation from the young people about what they had done.  All participants received certificates from Stuart Miller, YES.

Feedback has been really positive - here are some of the thoughts:

"I liked the maze game because we were not just sitting at a table, we were running about and working together to do something.  I learned not to trust someone to stand next to you and guide you when you are crawling under a table blindfolded."  Nicole

"In the morning games it showed the fact that you had to read the instructions over and over again to read between the lines as there was always a hidden secret about how to do the task."  Sean

"The morning activities were brilliant because good team and communications for future reference.  My favourite game was the business game when we made stuff and sold it like a real business."  Kieran

"After the day's activities in the morning it has brought me out of myself.  It's helped me to meet new people and be tolerant of them, I've really enjoyed the course.  I think it will help me when I go to college or work."  Mark

"I think the mornings were really exciting and fun.  They encouraged all members of the group to participate and everyone has benefited from them."  Alana

"I've really enjoyed everything.  I wouldn't have done these activities, the team building and all that without YES."  Gary

"I have enjoyed the morning courses because I have learned how to communicate with different groups of people and people I don't know I have made lots of new friends who I will stay in touch with."  Jade

"I think the challenges have been very good and the young people benefited from them all.  All the young people engaged and played their part in all the exercises."  Andy, Coach, EVIP Programme

"The morning activities have allowed the young people to develop their communication, problem solving and team working skills.  The Young Enterprise team have developed and delivered fun, informative workshops that have kept the young people engaged.  All the young people have participated fully and taken ownership of their activities."  Nicola McKenzie, Head of EVIP Programme, Glasgow City Council.
