Farr Woodcraft from Farr High School near Bettyhill on the North coast were YES's 2009 Winners. The Farr team not only won the Scottish Finals in June 2009 but came 3rd overall in the UK and won the Young Enterprise Production Award supported by GKN at the UK Finals on 8 July!
The team produced traditional "Adirondack" wooden garden furniture such as chairs, tables and footstools in pine and western red cedar. The original chair was designed by Company Secretary Lorna Stewart for her Standard Grade Craft and Design Project. The team learned to manufacture the product from start to finish, designed other products such as the accompanying footstool and even held an adult night class to teach local adults the art of woodcraft!
Of their win, Lorna Stewart, Company Secretary said: "We are very happy. There was some fair competition there but we just went there to give our best. The Awards event was amazing and all the team really enjoyed coming down to Glasgow for it."
Of the UK win, the team said: "Our team believed that we stood a good chance of winning the
Production Award, now to have won it we are delighted, especially as we were
placed 3rd Overall Winner in the whole of the UK - it is brilliant!"
The Farr Woodcraft team is Lorna Stewart, Jamie Lewis, Harris Mackay, Calum McEwan, Murdo Beaton, Jonathan Macdonald, Craig Mackenzie and Daryl Mackenzie. Their Link Teacher is David Charnley and Business Adviser Paul Lewis from the Ben Loyal Hotel in Tongue.
Stuart Miller, Chief Executive of YES, said: "The team from Farr High School are true ambassadors for entrepreneurial spirit and enterprise education in Scotland. It was interesting that the judging panel passed comment noting that Farr Woodcraft targeted the high end of the market place with a quality product that delivered on all accounts."
"I am particularly pleased for Linda Thomas, the Chair of the Highland Board, who along with her Board has put considerable time and effort into supporting the Company Programme teams in the Highlands."

Farr's
success follows in the footsteps of last year's UK
winners, Dimension, also from the Scotland region. And their
win is a second success for the Highland
area.
