Company Programme - Dimension Print E-mail

Young Enterprise Scotland’s winning company Dimension was also crowned the best Young Enterprise company in the UK in 2008.

Through the YES Company Programme, which involves young people setting up and running their own company in school, Dimension, from Fortrose Academy in Highland developed a fridge magnet and story-book to help children eat healthily.

The magnet has spaces for a child’s name and the day of the week and for recording the number of portions of fruit and vegetables they have eaten, alongside a section for the rewards that await once every day has been ticked off.  The book, Handful for Harry, tells a simple story about a character faced with unhealthy food at school, as well as activities and recipes.

Patrick Boyer, Managing Director said “We were thinking about children eating healthily and how we could appeal to them”

“We focused on the sort of issues that we found important – environment, health and education – and then looked for a suitable business opportunity”

Through the Young Enterprise Company Programme experience the team had the chance to attend many trade fairs, and took its products to Stratford-Upon-Avon in the spring, trying out some innovative ways to attract attention from its target markets of children and parents!

As part of Young Enterprise UK and Junior Achievement Worldwide, YES Company Programme students have, since the 1980s, had the chance to compete in the YEUK Company Competition against other students from across the UK

Dimension qualified for the UK Finals by winning the Scottish Finals in June 2008.  There, they impressed the judges with their presentation, report, trade stand and unique egalitarian staff structure to take top prize against other companies of a similarly high standard such as GoEco from Shetland which produced environmentally-friendly canvas bags, NuNu Teddies from the Western Isles with their bears wearing traditional Harris tartan (created by a previous Young Enterprise company!) and L.E.D (Limited Edition Designs) from Glasgow with their t-shirts designed by graduate art students.

They won again in London at the UK Finals and earned a place in the European Young Enterprise Awards in Stockholm!

In Sweden, Dimension competed against 33 countries from across Europe.  Their plans to expand sales of the product across the country and to produce versions in French, German and Spanish netted them the very first FedEx Global Impact Award, for understanding of global business.

Patrick Boyer said: “Healthy eating is important everywhere so we’re having the magnets translated into German, Spanish and French.”

Aside from this, it was also a fun experience and the team got to experience an ice bar, amusement park and experience running a trade stand at an international trade fair.

The Dimension team, of 5th and 6th years, was supported at all stages of the Company Programme by Link Teacher Margaret Rhynas, Business Advisers Roddy Dyce and Angus Morrison and the Highland Board, in particular Chair Linda Thomas.

The team members now plan to set up as a limited company.  Managing Director Patrick Boyer said: “We are really excited about selling to the whole of the UK.  Six of us are going to the same university from next year, so we plan to carry on the business.”

Dimension’s success represents the pinnacle of achievement in the Company Programme and the team’s well-deserved success attracted praise from key figures in the business and education communities in Scotland.  The team received personal congratulatory letters from Sir Tom Farmer, Adam Ingram, Minister for Children and Early Years and appeared on the Fred MacAuley radio show!
