Former Young Enterprise students.   

Area Board   

YES operates our Company Programme in partnership with a group of over 600 volunteers across Scotland.  Volunteers make up 17 Area Boards which cover the whole country and support Link Teachers and Business Advisers in secondary schools.

Area Board Chair    

The Area Board Chair heads up the local Area Board – other positions in each Board include Depute Chair, Treasurer, Secretary etc.

Business Adviser      

A Business Adviser is a volunteer from the business community who helps Young Enterprise companies with advice, attends company meetings and attends Young Enterprise events.

Café Conversations  

YES’ Café Conversations events allow local young people from 5th and 6th year to meet with business people over an informal cafe style meal and to hear first-hand from local entrepreneurs.

Company Programme         

The Young Enterprise Company Programme involves a group of young people (normally in 5th and 6th year) setting up and running their own company in school.

Concordat     

The Scottish Government’s single level financial agreement with Local Authorities.

CRBS

Central Registered Body in Scotland - The body which carries out Disclosure checks on volunteers.

A Curriculum for Excellence (ACfE)

Its four capacities (successful learners, confident   individuals, responsible citizens, effective contributors) state the aims of education in Scotland.

DLA

Disability Living Allowance - A tax-free benefit for children and adults who need help with personal care or have walking difficulties because they are physically or mentally disabled.

DtS

Determined to Succeed - The Scottish Government’s strategy for enterprise in education, through which young people will attain the four capacities of A Curriculum for Excellence.

Employability           

“A person's capability of gaining initial employment, maintaining employment, and obtaining new employment if required” (Hillage and Pollard, 1998)

Enterprise in Education      

Enterprise in education involves business and education working together. The shared ambition is to give children and young people positive attitudes to work and life.

ESA

Employment and Support Allowance - offers personal support and financial aid to those with illness or disability to help them to work if they are able to (replaces Incapabity Benefit (IB) from 28 October 2008).

European Finals       

The winning team of the Young Enterprise UK Finals (Company Programme) has the chance to compete at the European Finals, where they will be up against companies from 33 other countries to win the title of Best Company in Europe.

Finals 

Each Area Board in Scotland has its own Finals – companies from the area (doing the Company Programme in school) come together to compete to be the best in the Area.

Highers          

Scottish secondary school qualifications, usually taken in 5th or 6th year.

HMIe 

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education - In Scotland, a Scottish Government organisation which inspects and reviews educational bodies in Scotland to improve the quality of education and attainment.

IB       

Incapacity Benefit – paid to those who are too sick or disabled to work (replaced in October 2008 by ESA)

ILA      

Individual Learning Account.  ILA Scotland provides money to those below a set income bracket towards the cost of learning.

JSA    

Job Seekers Allowance – allowance payable if you’re of working age, but unemployed and seeking work.

Junior Achievement Worldwide

Young Enterprise Scotland and Young Enterprise UK are part of Junior Achievement Worldwide which encompasses over 130 countries across the globe.

Learning and Teaching Scotland  

“Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) provides advice, support, resources and staff development to the education community, creating a culture of innovation, ambition and excellence throughout Scottish education.” www.ltscotland.org.uk

Link Teacher

A secondary school teacher who delivers the Young Enterprise Company Programme in school.

Local Authority        

Scotland is divided into 32 directly elected Local Authorities which provide local services and receive a large part of their funding from the Government.

Masterclass               

Young Enterprise Scotland Local Area Boards often run Masterclass events with young people in their area to help them with key skills for the Finals event such presentation skills and report writing.

Mean Business Programme 

The YES Mean Business Programme involves young offenders setting up and running a business venture within the Young Offenders Institution.

National Board         

The Young Enterprise Scotland National Board overviews the strategic direction of the organisation and is comprised of Directors from the business community.

Positive Destinations

Young Enterprise Scotland has received funding from BBC Children in Need and the Hunter Foundation to work with young people who are in or are leaving care to help them to get back into education, find employment or go on to further education.

Primary Game Online

The Primary Game online involves learning partners Young Enterprise Scotland and Microsoft.  Primary school pupils set up and run their own sports store online www.theprimarygame.co.uk.

Primary Programme

Young Enterprise Scotland’s Primary Programme has 7 modules tailored from P1-P7 and uses fun, colourful materials to fit with the key themes of citizenship, the environment and enterprise from the Scottish curriculum.

PSYBT                                  

The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust is a charity which provides essential finance and professional support to young people in Scotland aged 18-25.

Secure Residential Unit       

Unit which is home to young people placed in care for their own protection or for the protection of others in the community.

Skills Development Scotland

Scotland’s new Skills Body which delivers skills, careers and learning support activities for individuals and employers in Scotland.

SQA   

Scottish Qualifications Authority - the national body in Scotland which is responsible for the development, accreditation, assessment and certification of qualifications other than degrees.

Trade Fair     

Like a market, Young Enterprise companies go along to a trade fair where they host a trade stand, at which they can personalise and sell their products to the public.

Trade Stand  

Like a market stall, young people set up and decorate their stand and display samples of their products.

UK Finals      

The Young Enterprise UK Finals involves winning companies from all Young Enterprise Regions across the UK coming together to compete for the title of Best Company in the UK!  The winner goes to the European Finals.

YEUK           

Young Enterprise UK, of which Young Enterprise Scotland is a part.

Young Offender Institution   (YOI)

A secure facility (or prison) that accommodates 15-20-year-olds who have been committed to custody.

SVQs

Scottish Vocational Qualifications - skills-based qualifications – “having an SVQ is a kind of guarantee that a candidate is competent to the standards that the SVQ is based on.” www.sqa.org.uk

 

 

Area Boards

Young Enterprise Scotland has a unique volunteer network of over 600 business people and educationalists from across Scotland and includes over 200 Area Board members. This network of eighteen Area Boards across Scotland ensures that geography is never a barrier to participation and ensures local schools are supported and managed.
